HOD: St Peter's Upper Church

Pembury

Sat 14th Sep

10.00 - 5.00 pm

The Upper Church in Pembury, consecrated in 1847 was built to reflect the growing population around the Upper and Lower Greens on the main highways through the village.

The site for the church and the stone for its construction were gifts of the Marquis Camden of Bayham. This Grade II* listed church building is different from the original design.

In 1984 the original ninety two foot steeple, with its crumbling stone, was removed. A few years later the interior of the church was reordered, to be better suited for modern use. The simple layout of the chancel blends well with the colours of the east window.

Of particular interest is a stained glass window in the west end of the north aisle, made in 1938 by the world renowned artist Leonard Walker, principal of London's St John's Art School. Walker used a slab glass technique, which is very much his own characteristic artistic style.
